Radioactive dating
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009863
A method for determining the age of an object or material by measuring the relative abundance of a radioactive isotope and its stable daughter products. This technique relies on the known, constant decay rate of the parent radionuclide. Carbon-14 dating is a common application for organic materials up to approximately 50,000 years old, while uranium-lead dating is used for much older geological samples.
