Rate-of-living theory of aging
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009950
A biological hypothesis proposing that an organism's lifespan is inversely proportional to its metabolic rate, suggesting that a faster metabolism leads to a shorter life. This theory posits that the accumulation of metabolic byproducts, such as reactive oxygen species, causes cellular damage that contributes to aging. While influential, modern research indicates that the relationship between metabolic rate and lifespan is more complex than initially proposed.
