Telomere
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011846
A region of repetitive nucleotide sequences located at each end of a linear chromosome, protecting it from degradation or fusion with other chromosomes. In vertebrates, the sequence consists of multiple repeats of TTAGGG. During cell division, these terminal sequences shorten, a process linked to cellular aging; the enzyme telomerase can add telomeric DNA sequences back to the ends of chromosomes, and its activity is a subject of analytical measurement in cancer and aging research.
