Telomerase
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011845
A ribonucleoprotein enzyme responsible for maintaining the length of telomeres by adding repetitive nucleotide sequences to the ends of eukaryotic chromosomes. This enzyme contains an RNA template that guides the synthesis of new telomeric DNA. Its activity is typically high in germ cells and cancer cells, but low or absent in most somatic cells.
