Stress theory of aging
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011476
A hypothesis that stress shortens lifespan by accelerating energy expenditure, so organisms exposed to more stress age faster. It adds that selection favors stress resistance, which leaves stress-resistant individuals over-represented in the oldest age classes of a population, and that loss of homeostatic capacity under stress should be slowest in the longest-lived. It resembles the rate-of-living theory in tying lifespan to energy use.
