Retainer and eluter

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010280

A pair of chemical species, a retainer acid or base and an eluter base or acid, used in pH-zone-refining counter-current chromatography to establish a stable pH gradient. The retainer is added to the stationary phase to bind the sample components, while the eluter is added to the mobile phase to displace and separate them. The pKa values of the retainer and eluter must bracket the pKa values of the analytes being separated.
