Root-mean-square end-to-end distance of a freely rotating chain
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010406
A theoretical measure of the average separation between the ends of a polymer chain where bond angles are fixed, but rotation around each bond is completely unhindered and independent of adjacent bonds. This model provides a more realistic representation than the freely jointed chain by incorporating fixed bond angles. It is calculated using statistical mechanics, often involving a characteristic ratio.
