Effective bond length
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003581
A root-mean-square length per skeletal bond, found from how far apart the two ends of a long linear chain lie on average when it is unperturbed: the square root of that mean-square separation divided by the bond count. It folds the real bond lengths, valence angles and torsional preferences into one number, so the chain can be pictured as freely jointed bonds of this length. For polyethylene it is about 0.4 nm, well above the 0.154 nm carbon-carbon bond length.
