Screening
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010597
The reduction of the effective charge of an atomic nucleus experienced by an electron due to the presence of other electrons in the atom. This effect is caused by the electrostatic repulsion between electrons, which partially cancels the attractive force of the nucleus. The screening effect is more pronounced for outer-shell electrons.
