Secretory component
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010643
A protein fragment derived from the polymeric immunoglobulin receptor that becomes attached to dimeric immunoglobulin A (IgA) during its transport across mucosal epithelial cells. This binding forms secretory IgA (sIgA), which is the main class of antibody found in mucosal secretions like saliva, tears, and milk. The secretory component has a molecular weight of approximately 70 kDa and protects the sIgA molecule from proteolytic degradation in the harsh mucosal environment.
