Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010644

A dimeric form of immunoglobulin A (IgA) that is found in external secretions such as tears, saliva, mucus, and breast milk. It consists of two IgA monomers, a J chain, and a secretory component, which protects it from degradation. This antibody provides localized immunity on mucosal surfaces, neutralizing pathogens and toxins before they can enter the body.
