poly-Ig receptor
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009147
A membrane glycoprotein on the basolateral surface of mucosal epithelial cells that carries polymeric antibodies, mainly dimeric IgA and pentameric IgM, across the cell to the lumen. It binds the J chain of these antibodies, ferries them through the cell by transcytosis, and is then cut by a protease at the apical surface. The released extracellular part, the secretory component, stays attached to the antibody, giving secretory IgA.
