Immunoglobulin class
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005674
A classification of antibodies based on the structural differences in their heavy chains, which determine their effector functions and distribution in the body. In mammals, there are five main classes: IgG, IgM, IgA, IgD, and IgE, each with distinct biological roles. For example, IgG is the most abundant class in serum and crosses the placenta, providing passive immunity to the fetus.
