Selenoxides
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010697
Organoselenium compounds with the general formula R-Se(=O)-R', where a selenium atom is bonded to two organic groups and one oxygen atom. They are the selenium analogues of sulfoxides and possess a pyramidal structure at the selenium atom, making them chiral when the organic groups are different. Selenoxides are key intermediates in organic synthesis, particularly in syn-elimination reactions that form alkenes at room temperature.
