Sex-determining region Y protein

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010787

A transcription factor encoded by the SRY gene on the Y chromosome in mammals. This protein initiates male sexual development by inducing the differentiation of the indifferent gonad into a testis. Its presence directs the developmental pathway towards maleness, even in the absence of other Y chromosome genes.
