Surrogate organism
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011690
A species used in ecotoxicological studies as a substitute for a target species that is difficult to test directly. This substitution is made when the target species is rare, protected, or has complex life cycle requirements that make laboratory testing impractical. The surrogate organism should exhibit similar physiological and ecological responses to the toxicant as the target species.
