Symbiosis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013626
The tendency for a central atom or ion to preferentially coordinate with ligands that are either all hard or all soft, rather than a mixture of the two types. This effect leads to the stabilization of complexes containing a uniform set of ligands. The concept is an extension of the Hard and Soft Acids and Bases (HSAB) principle, which describes the preferential bonding between hard acids and hard bases, or soft acids and soft bases.
