Symmetric
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011723
Describing a molecule or system that possesses one or more symmetry elements, such as planes of symmetry, axes of rotation, or a center of inversion. The presence of these elements dictates the molecule's point group and influences its spectroscopic properties, including its infrared and Raman activity. For example, a molecule with a center of inversion will have mutually exclusive infrared and Raman active vibrations.
