Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome

A neurological disorder resulting from severe thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency, primarily affecting individuals with chronic alcoholism. It presents as two distinct stages: Wernicke encephalopathy, characterized by confusion, ataxia, and ophthalmoplegia, followed by Korsakoff syndrome, which involves severe memory impairment and confabulation. Treatment involves thiamine supplementation.
