X-ray absorption analysis

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012747

An analytical technique that determines the elemental composition and chemical state of a sample by measuring the absorption of X-rays as a function of energy. When X-ray energy matches the binding energy of an inner-shell electron, a sharp increase in absorption occurs, known as an absorption edge. This method is sensitive to the local atomic environment and oxidation state of the absorbing element.
