X-ray absorption near edge structure
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012750
The region of an X-ray absorption spectrum immediately above an absorption edge, typically extending up to about 50 eV. This fine structure arises from electronic transitions to unoccupied bound states and multiple scattering events within the first few coordination shells. It provides information about the oxidation state, coordination geometry, and local electronic structure of the absorbing atom.
