X-ray absorption edge
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012748
A sharp increase in the X-ray absorption coefficient of a material that occurs when the incident X-ray photon energy matches the binding energy of an electron in a specific atomic shell. This phenomenon is characteristic of each element and its electronic configuration. The position and shape of the absorption edge provide information about the elemental identity and chemical environment.
