Balk

A strip of unplowed land separating cultivated fields or plots, serving as a boundary or pathway. In older agricultural practices, balks also provided habitat for beneficial insects and small wildlife. Modern farming techniques, with larger fields and machinery, have reduced the prevalence of these traditional field divisions.
