A specialized lamp used as a spectral line source in atomic absorption and atomic fluorescence spectroscopy. A Hollow Cathode Lamp (HCL) contains a cathode made of the element to be analyzed and is filled with an inert gas like neon or argon. Applying a voltage causes the gas to form a plasma that sputters atoms from the cathode, which are then excited and emit light at the characteristic wavelengths of that specific element.
