Roast

To heat an ore or concentrate in the presence of air, below its melting point, to effect a chemical change. This pyrometallurgical process converts sulfides to oxides, removes volatile impurities, or prepares the material for subsequent extraction steps. Roasting is a common preliminary step in the production of metals like copper and zinc.
