Actual innocence

A claim by a convicted person that they did not commit the crime for which they were convicted, regardless of legal technicalities or procedural errors. This concept is distinct from legal innocence, which means the prosecution failed to prove guilt. Demonstrating actual innocence can be grounds for overturning a conviction, particularly in habeas corpus proceedings.
