Autopsy

A medical procedure involving the thorough examination of a corpse to determine the cause, manner, and mechanism of death, and to evaluate any diseases or injuries present. Performed by a forensic pathologist, it involves both external and internal examination of the body and its organs. Autopsies are often conducted in cases of suspicious death, medical malpractice, or for research purposes.
