Champerty

An agreement in which an outsider to a lawsuit pays its costs in exchange for a share of any recovery, historically treated at common law as a wrong related to maintenance, the officious support of another's suit. Many US states have abolished or narrowed the doctrine, and third-party litigation funding is now widely permitted, although some states still restrict it.
