Compound question

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-005319

A question posed to a witness that combines two or more distinct inquiries into a single sentence, making it difficult to answer with a simple yes or no. This form of questioning is objectionable because it can confuse the witness, create ambiguity in the record, and prevent a clear answer to either part of the question. An opposing counsel will object, and the judge will require the questioner to break the query into separate, simpler questions.
