Indorsement
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-002613
The act of signing a negotiable instrument, such as a check or promissory note, to transfer it to another party. An indorsement legally passes ownership and the right to receive payment, making the indorser liable for the instrument's value if the original payor defaults. Indorsements can be blank (a simple signature), special (naming a new payee), or restrictive (limiting further negotiation, such as with the words "for deposit only").
