Intentional tort

A civil wrong resulting from an act that the defendant consciously performs, knowing with substantial certainty that harm will result. This category of torts requires proof of the defendant's specific mental state, such as a desire to cause injury or an awareness of the likely consequences. Examples include battery, assault, false imprisonment, and trespass to land.
