Piracy

The act of robbery or criminal violence committed at sea or, in a broader sense, the unauthorized reproduction or distribution of copyrighted material. Maritime piracy involves attacks on ships for theft or ransom. Intellectual property piracy includes illegal copying of software, music, or films, violating copyright laws.
(maritime) Acts of robbery or criminal violence committed on the high seas, outside the territorial jurisdiction of any state, against another vessel or its occupants. This includes acts of detention, plunder, or destruction for private ends. International law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, defines and prohibits maritime piracy.
