Power of appointment

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-003822

A legal right granted by a property owner (the donor) to another person (the donee) to designate the recipients of property. This authority allows the donee to direct how the property will be distributed, often in a will or trust. A general power of appointment permits the donee to name anyone, including themselves or their estate, as the recipient, while a special power restricts the donee to a specific class of beneficiaries.
