Coalescence

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000515

  1. The process where two or more cloud droplets or raindrops merge to form a single, larger droplet. This is a primary mechanism for the growth of precipitation particles in warm clouds. Coalescence is driven by differences in fall speeds between droplets, leading to collisions and subsequent merging.

  2. The process by which water droplets in a cloud collide and come together to form raindrops.
