Corrosion
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004721
The gradual degradation of materials, particularly metals, through chemical or electrochemical reactions with their environment. Atmospheric corrosion is driven by exposure to moisture, pollutants like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides that form acid rain, and airborne salts in coastal areas. The rate of corrosion is influenced by factors such as relative humidity, temperature, and the concentration of pollutants, with materials like zinc degrading much faster in industrial atmospheres than in clean rural air.
