Enstrophy
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005387
A scalar quantity in fluid dynamics equal to half the integral of the squared vorticity, which measures the intensity of rotational motion in a flow. In two-dimensional incompressible flow without friction, enstrophy is conserved along with kinetic energy. It cascades to small scales while energy cascades to large scales, a basic contrast with three-dimensional turbulence.
