Field changes
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005562
The rapid variations in the atmosphere's electrostatic field caused by the separation and movement of electrical charges within a thunderstorm. These changes are produced by lightning discharges, which neutralize charge centers and alter the local electric field. Instruments called field mills are used to measure these abrupt shifts, providing data on the frequency and characteristics of lightning activity.
