Field excursion associated with precipitation
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005563
A transient change in the atmospheric electric field observed at the surface during precipitation events. This phenomenon is caused by the fall of charged hydrometeors, such as raindrops or snowflakes, which carry electric charge from the cloud to the ground. The magnitude and sign of the excursion depend on the charge distribution within the cloud and the type of precipitation.
