Precipitation current

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008106

An electrical current generated within a thundercloud by the motion of charged hydrometeors, such as ice crystals and graupel. As these particles collide and separate in the presence of supercooled water, they acquire opposite charges and are then segregated by gravity and updrafts, creating a large-scale charge separation. This process establishes the cloud's electric field, which ultimately leads to lightning discharges.
