Forcing function

An external influence or input that drives changes within a meteorological or climate system. This can include solar radiation, volcanic eruptions, anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, or changes in land use. In mathematical models, it represents the non-homogeneous term that compels the system to evolve from its initial state.
