Gust peak speed

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010528

The highest instantaneous wind speed measured during a gust, which is a sudden, brief increase in wind velocity over a very short time interval. It is distinct from the sustained wind speed, which is averaged over a longer period, typically two or ten minutes. The World Meteorological Organization defines a gust as the maximum observed speed that exceeds the average speed by at least 10 knots (5 m/s) during the 10-minute interval.
