Immiscible displacement
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006462
The process by which one fluid pushes out another from a porous medium when the two fluids are insoluble in each other, such as oil and water. The efficiency of the displacement is controlled by the interplay of viscous forces, capillary pressures, and the relative wettability of the fluids with respect to the solid matrix. This concept is applied in environmental hydrology to model the subsurface migration of non-aqueous phase liquid contaminants in groundwater aquifers.
