Incoherent scatter radar

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006478

A powerful radar system designed to study the Earth's ionosphere by detecting the weak, thermally excited electron density fluctuations. It transmits high-frequency radio waves that are scattered by free electrons and ions in the plasma. The spectral analysis of the scattered signal provides information on electron density, temperature, and ion velocity in the upper atmosphere.
