Kernel ice

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006771

The opaque, central core of a hailstone, also known as the hail embryo. This initial particle consists of a frozen droplet or a graupel particle that serves as the nucleus for subsequent ice accretion. The structure of the kernel ice, whether it is conical or spherical, provides clues about the initial formation conditions within the updraft of a cumulonimbus cloud.
