Occlusion

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007657

The process in the life cycle of an extratropical cyclone where the cold front catches up to and merges with the warm front. This forces the warm air mass to rise above the surface, creating an occluded front. Occlusion marks the mature to dissipating stage of a cyclone, often leading to a decrease in its intensity as the surface temperature gradient weakens.
