Phase averaging

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007886

A signal processing technique used to extract the periodic component of a fluctuating signal from its random or turbulent background by aligning and averaging multiple realizations of the signal. The method aligns each realization based on a recurring event or phase reference point before computing an ensemble average, which isolates the coherent structure locked to that phase. This technique is applied to turbulent flow data to study organized structures like vortices shedding from an object.
