Piezometer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007943
An instrument for measuring the pressure head of a fluid, specifically groundwater in a borehole or pore water pressure in soil. It consists of a small-diameter pipe or tube with a porous tip at the bottom, placed at the desired measurement depth. The height to which water rises in the tube indicates the piezometric pressure, which is used to determine groundwater flow direction and gradient, and to monitor soil moisture conditions relevant to land-atmosphere interaction models.
