Potential density

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008077

The density a parcel of fluid would have if it were moved adiabatically and isentropically to a reference pressure level, typically the surface. This concept removes the effect of compressibility on density, allowing for a more accurate comparison of water masses at different depths. It is a key parameter in oceanography for analyzing water mass stability and circulation.
