Purple light

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008215

A faint purple glow seen on clear days over a large part of the western sky after sunset and over the eastern sky before sunrise, that is, on the same side as the sun. It is a regular part of the twilight color sequence rather than a rare event. Volcanic aerosol in the stratosphere intensifies it, as happened after the 1883 Krakatoa eruption.
