Sensing element

The part of an instrument that directly interacts with the physical quantity being measured and produces a corresponding output signal. For example, in a thermometer, the sensing element is the bulb containing mercury or alcohol that expands or contracts with temperature changes. Its characteristics, such as response time and accuracy, determine the overall performance of the sensor.
